When should I see an exercise physiologist?
There are a wide range of reasons why a person may benefit from consulting an accredited exercise physiologist. These include chronic disease management referrals after diagnosis of a range of conditions including:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Pulmonary disease
- Metabolic disease
- Neurological disease
- Musculoskeletal disease (including arthritis, osteoporosis / osteopenia, acute and/or chronic musculoskeletal issues)
- Depression and other mental health conditions
- Cancer
Accredited exercise physiologists may also assist with:
- Assessments of functional capacity
- Advice on lifestyle modification to improve health status
- Exercise prescriptions for strength and function improvement pre- and post-surgery
- Workplace assessments.
Services available at Lambton Physio include:
- Individual exercise-based rehabilitation programs and assessments: Focused on either injury treatment/prevention, and/or developing healthy habits, increasing overall physical activity levels, and building strength and cardiorespiratory fitness. Also focused on any specific goals that patients may have. Patients will be provided with an individualised home exercise program to complete independently, to encourage ongoing self-management. May be applicable for rebates under private health, Medicare EPC, or DVA.
- Group Clinical Exercise Classes: Includes mixture of reformer Pilates and balance/strength exercises, focused on individual goals. Maximum of 4 participants per class. May be applicable for rebates under private health.
- GLA:D Osteoarthritis Classes: 6-week evidence-based classes for treatment and management of knee and hip osteoarthritis. Proven to reduce pain, improve tolerance to activity and reduce pharmaceutical use. May be applicable for rebates under private health.
- Workers Compensation: SIRA-accredited provider, providing treatment of both physical and psychological injuries. Will require insurer approval prior to sessions.
- Pre-Employment Functional Assessments: Comprehensive pre-employment functionals, which include anthropometry, range of motion tests, manual handling tests (floor to waist, waist to shoulder, shoulder to overhead, pushing/pulling, and lifting/carrying), postural tolerance tests, an aerobic fitness test, and more.
